SUMMER, 2011

Executive Vice President’s Message

Wow! It’s the 4th of July already! Happy 235th Birthday America! I hope you all enjoyed the fireworks, fanfare and the freedom we are so fortunate to enjoy!

The Inverness TAP program continues to flourish! We have recently expanded to several new sites in GA and NC to include Ft. Benning, Ft. Gordon, Moody AFB and Warner-Robins AFB, GA as well as Camp Lejeune, NC. We have hired several new facilitators in these locations as well as several others around the globe. Welcome Aboard to all of our new facilitators wherever you are located! You have just joined the best training team in the world!

Inverness managers have been on the road observing you-our most valuable asset!  Yolanda Rayford, Eastern Region Project Manager recently completed a whirlwind recruiting trip to GA. Melissa Lawton, Western Region Project Manager visited all of our CO TAP sites. Dave Maurer met with six outstanding facilitators, at NVTI in Denver, CO before the start of their TAP Train-the-Trainer course. I was fortunate enough to travel to Vicenza, Aviano and Naples, Italy. I know what you’re thinking-it was tough but someone had to do it! There I met with Marjorie Love and Dana Murguia (Vice President and Project Manager respectively of the European Region) as well as Jill Casey, long-time TAP facilitator. I had an opportunity to observe both Jill and Dana on the podium. These site visits reinforce what we already know…that our TAP facilitators are simply the best, most dedicated and talented training team around! And of course we continue to highlight our fabulous training team in the Facilitator Spotlight section. Please read about our travels and visit the Photo Gallery section to get to know more about your fellow trainers.

This month we are featuring several interesting articles and I encourage you to read on to learn about and incorporate these new training resources and tips in your workshop delivery:

Find Your Passion: The Importance of Work Values and Preferences

Long commute?  Recognition for a job well done?  Lots of travel?  Family?  Advancement?  Are these important to you or not so much so?  For all of us in the working world, values and preferences are very important when we are making career decisions.  If an individual takes a position that meets as many of their preferences and values as possible, he or she is more likely to find a great deal of satisfaction in the position.  In addition, the employer will be happier with the employee and his or her performance.

Now is the time for transitioning military personnel to find their passion and by analyzing their values and preferences about what they want to do, they will be better prepared to look for employment, develop their resumes and go on job interviews.  No one wants to wake up every morning and go to a job we hate.  On average, people work in excess of 60 hours per week including the time it takes to get to and from work.  Spending such a significant amount of time involved in something that doesn’t make you happy or find rewarding can have negative repercussions.

For transitioning service members, completing a thorough self-assessment is a key step in the process, so they can determine what preferences and values are most important to them.  This will help guide the transitioner into positions and organizations where they choose to pursue employment.  In order to effectively determine preferences and values, they really need to know as much as possible about themselves.  Meeting as many of their preferences as they look for jobs will help ensure they find the “right fit, right match.”  Analyzing job, location, money and lifestyle is difficult; however, we all should determine what is most important to us as we embark on career transitions.

When interviewing for and researching a particular opportunity, participants should get as much information as possible on the values of the company as well as the working environment and conditions so they can make these informed determinations.  When an offer is extended, it is important for candidates to consider all of the pros and cons of the position as they relate to their stated preferences and values.

To be truly satisfied at work, try to choose a job that matches as many of your preferences and values as you can.

At your next workshop try the exercise below after facilitating the work preferences and values section – it’s a lot of fun and really gets the class talking!

Work Values and Preferences Exercise:

Ask everyone to stand up.  Tell them they can sit down if they don’t want the job as you go through the description.

1.                     After a couple of years you would be bringing in around $80,000.

2.                     You have to work shift work, days, swings, or mid’s.

3.                     You have to wear a uniform.

4.                     The boss is constantly looking over your shoulder.

5.                     Some people might call the work illegal or immoral.

6.                     The job is at a specific location.

Then have them guess what the job might be.

Correct Answer:  Blackjack Dealer in Vegas.

SHAUN DAVY

Country and Principal TAP Training Site(s): California:  Ventura County Naval Station, Port Hueneme  (Seabee Base)

Brief Bio:

Shaun Davy was born in Canada, raised in California, resided in four countries, has two daughters, one grandson, two grand-dogs; and one wife.  He entered the United States Marine Corps (Semper Fi), enjoyed twelve months of operations & patrols in Vietnam; and, returning home with all fingers/toes intact, promptly entered college and married his childhood sweetheart.  While working for an aerospace company, Shaun decided to see the world at Uncle Sam's expense, and because he looked better in blue, joined the Air Force.  Trained in Logistics, Shaun eventually went to Spain, working in Broadcast logistics; and, later, headquartered in Germany, helped launch SatNet (satellite network TV/Radio) for the European Theater.  That was his responsibility and project for many years.  So, if you watched TV or listened to the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS), blame . . . er, thank Shaun.  Returning to the U.S. after nearly twelve years, Shaun became an Operations Manager; and, then became Commandant and Senior Instructor for Professional Military Education.  Upon his retirement, Shaun served as the Assistant Director of Training for a University in the former Sandwich Islands, resourcing staff and students, while providing classroom training, as well.  His desire to continue investing in people took him as far as the east is from the west, to a University in Virginia, where he also trained the staff and students; and, returning full circle, Shaun finds himself living once again in California, where he's worked with one of the world's largest Outplacement and transition companies, with clients and professional leaders from Boeing, Disney, Litton, Lockheed-Martin and many other Fortune 500 companies.  As a TAP instructor, Shaun primarily trains the outstanding men and women of the Navy.  Shaun's current brand motto is:  Encouraging Transformation!

Interesting/Fun Fact:

Shaun recently taught in a South American international MBA course, in Spanish (much easier said than done).  He's also authored a Vietnam War pararescuer's biography (yet unpublished – ugh!).  And, he's also got the beat, as a percussionist, enjoying playing whenever possible.

Hiring of Veterans Increases*

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) reported that the federal government hired 72,133 Veterans in FY 2010 representing an increase of 2,000 in total hiring over FY 2009.

According to OPM, 25.6 percent of total new hires across the federal government in fiscal 2010 were Veterans, which is a 1.6 percentage point increase from FY 2009. It also said that 23,140 of the Veterans hired in FY 2010 are disabled Veterans, compared to 20,448 in FY 2009 – for a 1.2 percent increase.

The federal government traditionally has employed a significantly higher percentage of Veterans, and of disabled Veterans, than has the private sector, due to Veterans preference and Veterans hiring initiatives.

Anne McGhee Stinson (right), long-time TAP facilitator and Melissa Lawton, Western Regional Project Manager, at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado where Anne was delivering a workshop.

Inverness trainer Stacy Nichols (left) traveled in from Las Vegas to deliver a TAP Workshop at the Fort Carson WTU and was able to spend some time meeting with Melissa Lawton during her site visit.

Angela Hamilton, Inverness facilitator with Sherri Kitchens and Kehinde OshikoyaPamphille, Community Readiness Consultants that manage the TAP at Peterson AFB, CO.  From left to right are Angela, Sherri and Kehinde.

MELISSA LAWTON, WESTERN REGIONAL PROJECT MANAGER VISITS COLORADO

Melissa Lawton, Western Regional Project Manager, recently completed site visits in the beautiful Rocky Mountain state of Colorado.  We have a fabulous group of TAP facilitators in Colorado to include: Anne McGhee Stinson, Liz Wilson and Angela Hamilton. Robin Lovewell will also be transferring to the CO TAP training team in July following her PCS move from the UK. Melissa also got to meet Stacy Nichols from Las Vegas, NV who was covering a workshop for us. The first stop on her trip was at Buckley Air Force Base, located just outside of Denver in Aurora.  Anne McGhee Stinson was delivering a workshop to a group of separating and retiring service members.  Anne has a great rapport with participants and it was wonderful for Melissa to finally meet her in person.  While at Buckley, Melissa met with James Newby the Community Readiness Consultant that manages the TAP as well as the Airman and Family Readiness Center Director, Patricia Pope.  Inverness was asked to start delivering TAP Workshops at Buckley in the fall of 2010 and the site staff members are very pleased with Inverness.

The next stop was Colorado Springs where Melissa had dinner with two Inverness trainers, Angela Hamilton and Stacy Nichols.  Angela was a wonderful driver and escort and showed us a bit of “The Springs.”  It was also a very special evening as Melissa and Stacy both taught TAP in Germany dating back to 2007, but never actually met.

Unfortunately for us, but terrific for her – Liz Wilson was away in Florence, Italy for her sister’s wedding.  Florence in June – what could be better?

Melissa was able to observe Angela who just joined the team last February.  Angela did an outstanding job, of course, and Melissa was very impressed with the wonderful facility at Peterson and the employers that the staff brings in to assist with mock interviewing, Q&A and offering advice.  Melissa was able to meet the outgoing TAP Manager, Sherri Kitchens as well as the newly appointed TAP Manager Kehinde OshikoyaPamphille.

The afternoon was spent at Fort Carson at the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) where Melissa took a tour of the facility and was able to meet with Leonardo Martinez and Charles Moss, the two ACAP Counselors that assist the wounded warriors each and every day.  Stacy Nichols did an outstanding job facilitating to this group and we appreciate Stacy traveling to Colorado to deliver this workshop.  Following Melissa’s time at the WTU, she visited the main ACAP Center and met with Lois Bay, the Contract Installation Manager for Fort Carson.

The next morning Melissa visited Schriever Air Force Base which was quite an adventure.  Melissa somehow got totally lost and was pretty much in the middle of nowhere with just lots of rolling fields and cows!  She finally made it to the base and had a wonderful tour of the Airman and Family Readiness Center and met with Liz Archuleta, the Community Readiness Consultant that manages TAP at Schriever.

Melissa also met David Palmer, Assistant State Director of the Veteran’s Employment and Training Service for Colorado.  It was so nice to put the face with the name and the voice!

Melissa’s last stop was the Air Force Academy where she was given a tour by Donna Chavez, the Community Readiness Consultant that manages the program.  Anne McGhee Stinson delivers the monthly workshop at the Academy and gets high praise from the folks at the site.  Melissa was met Chris Alfano, who managed the program there for many years.

This was an extremely productive and positive trip.  It was wonderful to continue to build strong relationships with our facilitators and the site managers and to see these outstanding folks in person.

At Long Last…a Visit to TAP Sites in Italy!

At long last Diane was finally able to get out of the office, away from the paperwork and visit the beautiful country of Italy with all its history, famous works of art, architecture, cathedrals and of course the beautiful Mediterranean! It was a privilege to visit Aviano Air Force Base, Vicenza Army Base and Naples Navy Base while I was there, meet the DOD site staff we work with so closely and observe first-hand the outstanding performance of the Inverness facilitators and management team.  My trip started with a site visit to Aviano Air Force Base which is currently the forward operating base for our operations in Libya. I was accompanied by Jill Casey, long-time TAP Facilitator. A military spouse, Jill starting facilitating TAP workshops back in 2004 when she was in Korea, transferred to Hawaii and now facilitates TAP workshops for us in Italy. What a great win-win for the program! We met with Gwendolyn Lee, Flight Chief (formerly at Langley and Ramstein AFB) Jason Gunnerson, the new TAP Manager, Deborah Jefferson, the outgoing TAP Manager and the rest of the Airman and Family Readiness Center team! What a great group! I also had my first “Italian” pizza. Delizioso!

Then it was onto Vicenza Army Base. Here I was able to observe Jill on the podium. She had a great group of participants and immediately got them engaged in the workshop with exercises and questions. Great job Jill! We also met with Major Wright, the Contract Installation Manager with the ACAP program at Vicenza. We really appreciate our partnership with Vicenza and the outstanding support we receive each and every time!

The final stop was Naples. I met with Marjorie Love, Vice President and Dana Murguia, Project Manager of the European Region. Marjorie has been with the TAP program (first with CONUS and now Overseas) for over seven years and has been instrumental in the success of both programs. Now stationed in Naples, Italy with her husband she manages the European program from Italy! Dana, who resides just outside of Heidelberg, GE and manages the European program from there, was in Naples to facilitate the TAP workshop. Marjorie, Dana and I were able to spend some great, quality time together. The next day we observed Dana facilitating the TAP workshop and met the Naples FFSC staff of Glovinia Harris, Lewis Collins, Amber Becker and Tammy Metcalf – pictured here. Dana did an outstanding job and it was a pleasure to see her in action! Another group of transitioning service members and spouses benefited from the outstanding knowledge, skills and abilities that Inverness facilitators bring to the table. And what a great partnership we have with the Naples Fleet and Family Support Center team….it was a pleasure to meet them in person!

Finally it was the last day of a truly memorable trip. Following a fabulous dinner overlooking the Mediterranean with Marjorie and John Love and my husband David, we finally had to say Arrivederci….Ciao to Italy! Next…Souda Bay, Greece or Rota, Spain. Um…tough choice!
